Abstract

Field experiments were conducted on silty clay soil to study the effect of sowing dates (October 15 and November 15) on growth and yield of chickpea cultivars during rabi season in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Ten varieties were evaluated for their relative field performance with respect to morpho-physiological and yield contributing characters under intermediate conditions of Jammu region. During 2007-08, the mean grain yield of crop sown on October 15 was 2,618 kg/ha, which was higher than the grain yield recorded under November 15 (2,455 kg/ha). Variety ‘BDG 72’ gave the highest grain yield (3,130 kg/ ha). ‘Pusa 1053’, ‘Pusa 372‘ and ‘Pusa 256’ were the medium yielding varieties with grain yield of 2,856, 2,740 and 2,590 kg/ ha, respectively. During 2008-09, October 15 sowing gave highest grain yield of 2,887.5 kg/ha which was significantly higher than the mean grain yield of crop sown on November 15. Among varieties ‘BGD 72’ was highest yielder (3,525.0 kg/ha) followed by ‘Pusa 1053’ (3,189.5 kg/ha), ‘Pusa 256’ (3,115.0 kg/ha) and ‘Pusa 1105’ (3,020.0 kg/ha).
