Thirty genotypes of cowpea were screened for bruchid resistance under laboratory condition and they were also assayed for Amylase inhibitor activity. Observations were recorded for total number of eggs laid, per cent adult emergence, extent of seed damage (total holes/twenty seeds, number of holes per seed, type of holes in each seed) and per cent weight loss of seeds. The genotypes have shown differential level of resistance. Amylase inhibitor activity among the genotypes had considerable variability, majority of genotypes exhibited positive correlation between amylase inhibitor activity and bruchid resistance. However, presence of high activity of amylase inhibitor among some susceptible genotypes further includes possibilities of involvement of other factors in addition to amylase inhibitor against the bruchid.
