Effect of phosphorus and seed rate on growth and productivity of large seeded kabuli chickpea in subtropical kandi areas of Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract

Experiments were conducted during rabi seasons of 2003-04 and 2004-05 at Pulses Research Sub-Station, Samba of SKUAST-Jammu on sandy loam soils to evaluate the effect of phosphorus (0,30 and 60 kg P,O/ha) and seed rate (75, 100 and 125 kg/ha) on the productivity of large seeded chickpea ev. BG 1053. Results indicated that seed rate of 100 kg/ha significantly increased seed yield/ha (1012.3 kg/ha) over 75 kg/ha (909.5 kg/ ha) and further increase in seed rate recorded lower seed yield (995.2 kg/ha) due to relatively inferior yield attributes with increase in seed rate. Increasing levels of phosphorus up to 60 kg P,O/ha resulted in significant increase in dry matter accumulation (18.17 g/plant), phosphorus uptake, yield attributes viz., pods/plant, seeds/pod and 1000-seed weight) and seed yield (1145.9 kg/ha). Increased P,O, levels greatly reduced pod damage (16.0%) while increased seed rate from 75 to 100 kg/ha increased Helicoverpa population (22.7% and 30.7% with seed rate of 75 and 125 kg/ha).
