Abstract

A field experiment was conducted in three winter seasons of 2002-05 to study the influence of sowing time and seed rates on the performance of desi chickpea cultivars under dryland conditions. Number of branches and pods per plant, seeds per pod, 1000-seed weight and seed yield decreased progressively with each successive delay in sowing time. The productivity of chickpea sown on 20th October was 13.4% higher than that of 5th November sown crop, which, in turn, recorded yield advantage of 74.2% over 20th November. Chickpea cultivar, PBG 1 significantly outyielded PBG 5 with a mean seed yield increase of 9.9%. PBG 5 recorded significantly higher 1000-seed weight but lower number of pods per plant and seeds per pod than PBG 1. Higher seed rate failed to perceptibly increase yield attributes and yield. PBG 1 performed equally well when sown either on 20th October or on 5th November, while PBG 5 produced maximum seed yield when sown on 20th October. Further delay in sowing resulted in significant yield reduction in both cultivars under dryland conditions. Higher seed yield of PBG 1 was recorded with seed rate of 40 kg/ha while PBG 5 produced significantly higher seed yield with 60 kg/ha compared to 40 kg/ha.
