A field experiment was conducted during 1999-2000 and 2000- 2001 on a silty clay loam soil to identify suitable rice based utera crops with high productivity and profit for lower Assam. Rice as base crop was relayed with feasible utera crops, viz., lathyrus, lentil, pea for green pods, chickpea, linseed and toria. Among the rice-ntera (relay) crop sequences, rice-lentil was the most productive with highest production efficiency (30.5 kg/ha/day) and net return of Rs 32,935 in spite of lower land use efficiency (68.2%) than rice-chickpea or rice-lathyrus. Toria crop with small seeds faced the problem of stand establishment and subsequently produced lowest seed yield (220 kg/ha) and net return (Rs 1,015).
