Abstract

Proximate composition of grains of 17 pigeonpea genotypes (Cajanus cajan L.) representing three maturity groups was on dry weight basis. In addition, nitrate reductase enzyme was characterized from trifoliate leaves of pigeonpea by an in vivo method. Biochemical parameters such as ash, crude protein, crude fibre and total carbohydrate differed among the genotypes in various maturity groups. The levels of methionine and tryptophan in the grains varied from 0.76 to 1.11 g 16 g' N and 0.60 to 1.08 g 16 g' N, respectively. Among genotypes ICPL 87 had the highest content of crude protein (26.38%). The cotyledonary leaves had the highest NR activity followed by the first and second trifoliates in all the genotypes.
