Performance of liquid and carrier based inoculants in urdbean and mungbean was compared under field conditions during 2002 and 2003 at Pantnagar. The liquid inoculant was found statistically comparable to carrier based inoculants in terms of nodulation, plant dry matter and grain yield production in both crops. Carrier based inoculant of CRU-7 was found better than the liquid inoculant in urdbean in enhancing nodule dry weight (12.5%), plant dry weight (4.7%) and grain yield (3.7%). In mungbean, liquid inoculant of CRM-6 recorded slightly higher nodule number (12.2%), and plant dry weight (6.0%), than the carrier based inoculant. The university inoculant of both urdbean (UP-1) and mungbean (PMR-1) registered the highest mean nodule number over the uninoculated control.
