Abstract

The phage resistant mutants, isolated from mothbean Rhizobium isolate MR 67 sensitive to MRV 67 (a lytic rhizobiophage), were studied on four hosts, namely mothbean, mungbean, cowpea and guar (cluster bean). Spontaneously arising rhizobiophage mutants were isolated and cultured and aseptically grown plants were inoculated. Under controlled conditions, guar plants revealed nodules only with some phage resistant mutants, whereas mothbean, mungbean and cowpea were invariably nodulated with parents and phage resistant mutants. Results revealed that rhizobial inoculations produced significant effect on all the symbiotic traits in all the three hosts except for fresh and dry nodule weight in mungbean and cowpea. On the basis of nitrogen content per plant, mutant MR67Sm'Vr50 outperformed on mothbean and mutant MR675m2 Vr27 on mungbean. On cowpea, none of the mutants was significantly superior to parents. For nodule number and nitrogen content per plant, cowpea exhibited more pronounced effect with phage resistant mutants than mungbean and mothbean. There was significant influence of host genetic system on nodule diameter, efficiency of nodule functioning and nodulation status.
