Rhizobium inoculation in urdbean and its residual effect on wheat

Abstract

Influence of Rhizobium inoculum rates on symbiotic performance of urdbean and their residual effect on wheat crop were examined under field conditions for three consecutive years on a Mollisol at Pantnagar. The recommended dose of inoculum @ 20 g kg' seed did not influence nodulation and grain yield of urdbean. Doubling the recommended inoculum rate significantly improved nodulation and grain yield by 29.2% over the uninoculated control. Residual effect of urdbean inoculated with the recommended inoculum rate on wheat was comparable to the uninoculated urdbean, while higher inoculum rate (40 g kg seed) gave significantly higher plant dry weight at 50-55 DAS, plant height and N uptake by grain and straw. Irrespective of fertilizer N levels, the higher inoculum rate also produced significantly higher mean grain and straw yields of wheat by 10.7 and 10.9% over the uninoculated urdbean. The residual effect of recommended and two times of the recommended inoculum rates on wheat grain yield ranged from 46 to 180 and 279 to 356 kg ha'', respectively at different levels of applied N in wheat. Residual effect of Rhizobium at higher rate was equivalent to nitrogen contribution of about 30 kg ha' in terms of wheat yield
