Kalazira [Bunium persicum (Boiss) Fedts] is an expensive spice grown extensively in district Kinnaur of Himachal Pradesh. The plant remains biologically active above ground from mid March to mid July. Thereafter, fields are kept fallow until its management practices begin by mid October. Field study was conducted with the objective being temporal and spatial intensification of cropping in kalazira fields by standardizing seeding time of rajmash as relay crop. Six seeding times (May 31 to July 6) were compared to kalazira sole. Seeding from May 31 to June 15 during 1999 and 2000 resulted in significantly higher pods/plant, seed/pod, 1000-seed weight, seed yield of rajmash and kalazira equivalent yield. Late sown rajmash crop was severely affected due to frost damage late in the season when it was at flowering/pod development stage in 1999 and 2000. However, when weather was favourable at maturity during 2001, all seeding times (May 31- June 29) were equally good in influencing seed yield of rajmash. Variety Kailash (2142 kg/ha) was more promising resulting in 18.31% and 17.11% higher yield over variety Baspa in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
