Dynamics of area, production, productivity and export of pulses from India

The present study was conducted to know the growth rate, instability and trade dynamics of total pulses of India over a period of 20 years using secondary data. The data was collected from different e-resources. The major findings of the study revealed that the growth rate in productivity was higher than the growth rate in area under cultivation. A low instability index indicated that the area, production, and productivity of total pulses were relatively stable with minimal fluctuations. The present study also revealed that the export of pulses from India showed significant positive growth and a high instability index, indicating significant fluctuations in the export. Markov chain and transition probability analysis identified that the countries pooled under the category ‘others’ were the most loyal countries to India in importing pulses, followed by the USA, China, and Bangladesh.
