The present study aimed to assess the impact of manipulating the planting dates to reduce Maruca vitrata population and damage on Kharif mungbean. Seasonal abundance and damage potential of M. vitrata were studied in two mungbean varieties (ML 2056 and ML 1808) sown at three dates of sowing. The mean larval incidence of M. vitrata was observed to be significantly highest in the crop sown during the first fortnight of July at both locations. The damage due to M. vitrata was observed to be significantly lower in the crop sown during the first week of August and was statistically at par with the crop sown in the second fortnight of July at both locations. Owing to lower larval abundance and webs, mean pod damage and maximum grain yield, the second fortnight of July was found to be the optimum time for sowing Kharif mungbean in Punjab.
