Abstract

In the present study, twenty-one cluster bean genotypes were evaluated across nine qualitative traits. The study revealed substantial phenotypic variability for leaf colour, pod shape, seed shape and seed colour. In contrast, flower colour, pod pubescence, early plant vigour, plant pubescence and leaf shape exhibited the least diversity, with values falling below the overall mean. The Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (H’) for the evaluated traits ranged from 0.56% to 1.93%, with seed colour showing the highest diversity index, followed by leaf colour, pod shape, seed shape, early plant vigour and flower colour. The average Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index value of 97.22% confirmed substantial diversity within the studied cluster bean genotypes. These findings suggest that indirect selection of cluster bean parent plants based on various morphological traits may provide advantages in improving yield and managing both biotic and abiotic stresses. This knowledge is valuable for effective pre-breeding strategies, management practices and utilization in crop improvement programmes as well as enhancing the genetic potential of the crop.
